A little bit about us.
Overcoming Early Adversity: How E.L. Built the Resilience That Shaped His Future
Learning Skills to Rise Above
E.L. and his sister grew up in a supportive home with their parents, Everett Sr. and Sandra Adams. After graduating from West Charlotte High School, he moved to Phillips Academy–Andover in Massachusetts to pursue his passion for basketball and prepare for the next level of his athletic and academic career.
Transitioning to life away from his family brought new challenges, but the biggest came in the classroom. For the first time, E.L. struggled academically, all while coping with the emotional weight of his parents’ divorce back home. The combination of distance, pressure, and personal upheaval forced him to confront discomfort in ways he never had before.
During this period, E.L. began to develop the tools he would later rely on throughout his life. He learned how to reflect honestly, manage disappointment, regulate his emotions, and problem-solve under stress. These early lessons not only helped him navigate that difficult season—they became the foundation for how he would handle future obstacles both on and off the court.
From the Court to the Classroom: How Basketball Helped E.L. Find His Academic Path
The Turning Point
E.L. began his university journey at St. Francis Xavier in Nova Scotia, driven by his love for basketball and an initial plan to study Marketing. But once classes started, he found himself disconnected from the program and struggled to stay motivated. Leaning on personal strategies, he managed the frustration and uncertainty that came with feeling out of place academically.
Everything shifted when he enrolled in a forensic psychology course. The material sparked a genuine interest in human behaviour, opening a new direction he hadn’t considered before. With that clarity, E.L. transitioned into a double major in Psychology and Sociology.
Balancing his evolving academic path with his commitment to basketball, university life finally felt aligned and meaningful. Both on the court and in the classroom, E.L. began to thrive.
From Student to Support: How E.L. Turned His Challenges Into a Career of Helping Others
Supporting the Next Generation
After returning to the U.S., E.L. went on to complete his studies at Tennessee Technological University, earning a master’s degree in Educational and Counseling Psychology. He later advanced his training by completing a Specialist in Education degree.
Through his graduate work, E.L. gained the clinical insight, practical skills, and emotional understanding needed to support young people experiencing hardships similar to those he overcame himself. His education not only strengthened his expertise—it positioned him to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others navigating their own challenges.
